Energy Solutions for a Changing World

Phelan Energy, a subsidiary of the Phelan Green Group, brings decades of renewable energy expertise and a successful track record in developing utility-scale Solar PV, Wind and Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) projects that create lasting economic value and power the transition to a lower-carbon future.

Three Technologies. One Energy Strategy

Solar

Through our renewable operations, the Phelan Green Group has become a driving force in solar innovation, with an installed capacity exceeding 500MWp. Our journey in South Africa began in 2014 with the country’s largest REIPP tender of 94MW.

In 2016, our subsidiary Solar Capital completed the Southern Hemisphere’s largest solar farm, delivering 175MW of green energy.

Our strategy is to build a robust landbank, construct efficient and scalable plants at competitive costs, and secure sustainable financing, supported by our balance sheet. With expert teams leading each project, we remain focused on producing renewable energy at the lowest possible cost, making solar central to the global clean energy transition.

Wind

Phelan Green Group is an investor in Wind production and is now expanding this sector as a vital contributor to their required renewable energy mix. By pairing technology with environmental care, we design and deliver large-scale wind projects that provide reliable, cost-effective electricity.

Our approach balances efficiency with sustainability, ensuring every wind farm operates to the highest standards of performance while minimising impact on the environment.

As the world pursues decarbonisation, wind energy will be essential to building resilience in the global power supply. At Phelan Green Group, we are harnessing nature’s strength to support this transition, creating projects that not only produce clean energy but also leave lasting value for communities and generations to come.

BESS

Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) complete the renewable energy cycle, ensuring solar and wind can deliver power consistently and competitively. Over the past decade, costs of both batteries and solar panels have dropped by more than 90%, unlocking new opportunities for large-scale adoption.

At Phelan Green Group, we develop advanced BESS solutions that deliver reliability, performance, and flexibility. By integrating storage into renewable projects, we enable energy to be supplied when demand is highest, empowering communities and industries to depend fully on clean power.

De Aar Solar Projects

Driving South Africa’s Early Utility-Scale Solar Success

Located in De Aar, Northern Cape, South Africa, this project represents one of Phelan Energy’s flagship renewable energy developments and a major milestone in South Africa’s renewable energy transition. Successfully grid-connected in 2014 and 2016, the projects helped establish the country’s utility-scale solar sector and were recognised internationally for their scale.

Named by CNN in 2016 as the largest solar plant in Africa, the Middle East and the Southern Hemisphere at the time of completion.

Location:De Aar, Northern Cape, South Africa
Technology:Utility-scale Solar PV
Capacity:175 MW
Grid Connection:2014 & 2016

Project Orange

Expanding Renewable Energy Generation in the Northern Cape

Situated near Loeriesfontein in South Africa’s Northern Cape, Project Orange further strengthens Phelan Energy’s proven track record in delivering utility-scale solar infrastructure. Commissioned in April 2023, the project contributes clean, reliable electricity to South Africa’s national grid.

Location:Loeriesfontein, Northern Cape, South Africa
Technology:Utility-scale Solar PV
Capacity:86 MW
Grid Connection:April 2023
Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS)

Hopefield

The Hopefield Battery Energy Storage System is a planned utility-scale energy-storage facility in the Western Cape. With 1,000 megawatt-hours of storage and a 4-hour discharge duration, the system will be capable of supplying approximately 250 megawatts of power continuously for up to four hours.

The Battery Energy Storage System will store electricity for dispatch when required, helping to balance renewable-energy generation, improve grid flexibility and support a more stable and reliable electricity supply.

Location:Hopefield, Western Cape, South Africa
Technology:Lithium-ion Battery Energy Storage System
Capacity:1,000 MWh (≈250 MW output)
Grid Connection:132 kV

Integrated Renewable Ecosystems

Renewable energy does more than power homes and businesses. It powers the next generation of clean fuels. By combining utility-scale Solar PV, Wind and Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), Phelan Energy produces the reliable renewable electricity needed to manufacture green hydrogen and synthetic fuels at scale.

Renewable Electricity

Solar PV and Wind generate clean electricity. Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) store excess energy and supply power when renewable generation changes. Together, they provide a stable source of renewable electricity.

Renewable Electricity

Green Hydrogen

Renewable electricity powers electrolysers that split water into hydrogen and oxygen. The result is green hydrogen produced without fossil fuels. It is the foundation for a new generation of low-carbon fuels.

Green Hydrogen

eMethanol & eSAF

Green hydrogen is combined with captured carbon to produce eMethanol and eSAF, using Honeywell UOP's Fischer Tropsch Unicracking™ process technology. These synthetic fuels can replace conventional fossil fuels in industries where direct electrification is difficult, including aviation and shipping.

eMethanol & eSAF

Industrial Decarbonisation & Energy Security

Renewable electricity, green hydrogen and eFuels provide practical alternatives to fossil fuels for industries that are difficult to electrify. Producing these clean energy sources locally helps reduce emissions and dependence on imported fossil fuels, strengthening long-term energy security.
