Founded in 2005 by Paschal Phelan, Phelan Green Group is headquartered in Cape Town, South
Africa, and operates across seven countries on four continents. We develop renewable solutions in
Solar PV, eFuels, Battery Storage (BESS), and Wind Energy.
Through our South African subsidiary Solar Capital, we have installed more than 500MWp of
solar capacity worldwide. The Phelan Family has also assembled a strategic land portfolio
exceeding 30,000 hectares to support future projects.
Our goal is clear: to deliver the world’s lowest-cost green energy. Backed by experienced
executives and strong financial capacity, we continue to pioneer new frontiers, including eFuels,
accelerating the transition to sustainable power globally.
The Phelan Clan traces its lineage to the 108th King of Ireland, Felim, and his son Fiacha, born in
148 AD. For centuries, resilience and determination have shaped our family’s story.
In 1884, Kyran Phelan, grandfather of Paschal, founded a whiskey enterprise the beginning of the
expansion into retail, agriculture, hospitality, and meat. Each generation carried forward this
entrepreneurial spirit, embracing new industries while honouring heritage. This legacy lives on in
renewable energy.
Paschal and his Family moved to Cape Town, South Africa in 2002, where his sons Blair and
Pearse now join him in leadership roles to drive the Phelan business through the 21st century.
Today, We see ourselves as custodians of both business and environment, safeguarding prosperity
for future generations. Guided by history and inspired by innovation, we continue our journey
toward a brighter sustainable future.
Through our renewable operation, the Phelan Green Group has become a driving force in solar
innovation, with an installed capacity exceeding 500MWp. Our journey in South Africa began in
2014 with the country’s largest REIPP tender of 94MW.
In 2016, our subsidiary Solar Capital completed the Southern Hemisphere’s largest solar farm,
delivering 175MW of green energy.
Our strategy is to build a robust landbank, construct efficient and scalable plants at competitive
costs, and secure sustainable financing, supported by our balance sheet. With expert teams leading
each project, we remain focused on producing renewable energy at the lowest possible cost,
making solar central to the global clean energy transition.
Reaching Net-Zero by 2050 will require renewable energy at terawatt scale, making land a vital
resource. The Phelan Family has assembled a strategic land portfolio exceeding 30,000 hectares to
support future projects. The Phelan Green Group, has a strategic vision and is building a global plan to decarbonize air
travel with the production of eSAF.
In November 2023, we launched, our first stage, with Phelan eFuels South Africa located in
Saldanha Bay, Western Cape, under 100kms from Cape Town. This $800m innovative investment
by the Group in Green Hydrogen ‘gH2’ and eMethanol ‘eM’ will produce 80,000 metric tons of
gH2 annually and 400,000 metric tons of eM for export to EU and UK. It will generate 2,500
construction jobs, 250+ permanent roles, and R6 billion (US$320m) in annual revenues.
This project marks the first step in our global eFuels programme, with international developments
advancing in, India and Egypt, for similar investments, to meet growing clean energy demand.
Phelan Green Group, is an investor in Wind production, and is now expanding this sector as a
vital contributor to their required renewable energy mix. By pairing technology with
environmental care, we design and deliver large-scale wind projects that provide reliable, costeffective electricity.
Our approach balances efficiency with sustainability, ensuring every wind farm operates to the
highest standards of performance while minimising impact on the environment.
As the world pursues decarbonisation, wind energy will be essential to building resilience in the
global power supply. At Phelan Green Group, we are harnessing nature’s strength to support this
transition, creating projects that not only produce clean energy but also leave lasting value for
communities and generations to come.
Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) completes the renewable energy cycle, ensuring solar and
wind can deliver power consistently and competitively. Over the past decade, costs of both
batteries and solar panels have dropped by more than 90%, unlocking new opportunities for
large-scale adoption.
At Phelan Green Group, we are developing advanced BESS solutions that provide reliability,
performance, and flexibility. By integrating storage into renewable projects, we enable energy to
be supplied when demand is highest, empowering communities and industries to depend fully on
clean power.
